Sobre o filme na estreia da Ericeira, em 1 de Setembro: «o filme é triste porque mostra o lugar que era a Madeira e naquilo que se tornou. Não é só sobre a questão da perda para os surfistas, mas também sobre aquilo que todos perderam.»Num exclusivo do Olho de Fogo, as primeiras declarações de espectadores que assistiram à estreia, em Portugal, do Lost Jewel of the Atlantic. Recorde-se que foi mostrado no Surf and Beach Film Festival, um evento específico. Mesmo assim, algumas leituras e conclusões vão além das razões desportivas (surf).
«O filme mostra o que realmente aconteceu na Madeira e o que lá se perdeu. Três ondas foram danificadas e uma foi totalmente destruída. Penso que mostrará a toda a gente os erros que o governo cometeu.
É fácil compreender as alegações de que a onda no Jardim do Mar continua a mesma. Eles não compreendem as ondas, o que é "backwash", o que é uma ruptura na corrente marítima. Estive lá após a construção e a onda não é a mesma.
O filme constitui um demonstração positiva das razões segundo as quais deveríamos preservar todas as ondas do planeta.»

«O filme é triste porque mostra o lugar que era a Madeira e naquilo que se tornou. Estes projectos de construção aconteceram, basicamente, porque há uma falta de informação e consciência, especialmente no Jardim do Mar, onde as pessoas pensaram que a muralha iria beneficiar os habitantes.
Este é um problema que já sucedeu em Portugal Continental e noutras partes do mundo, onde o ambiente natural foi destruído. Não é só sobre a questão da perda para os surfistas, mas também sobre aquilo que todos perderam. As pessoas que apreciavam a costa natural, que gostavam de nadar junto à praia de calhau não têm agora acesso ao mar, excepto através de uma rampa escorregadia para barcos.
O argumento do presidente [do Governo Regional] da Madeira de que as ondas do Jardim do Mar continuavam iguais está completamente errado. Ele não sabe do que está a falar. É como quando as pessoas vêm assistir a uma competição de surf: não sabem donde vem o "swell"; como as marés afectam o surf; o que é "backwash" e porque é mau para um surf spot. Não podem ajuizar sobre a qualidade do surf se não sabem nada sobre o mar.
O filme é justo para ambos os lados. Apresenta ambos os pontos de vista, como era a ilha antes e depois da construção e até o que os madeirenses pensavam antes da construção e pensam agora depois de concluída.
Parece que muita gente mudou de opinião depois de concluída a construção. As pessoas do Jardim do Mar perderam uma fonte de orgulho relativamente à sua freguesia, porque a sua onda deixou de ser a melhor da ilha e a aldeia perdeu alguma da sua beleza natural.»

«The film shows what really happened in Madeira, and what was lost there. Three waves were damaged and one was completely destroyed. I think it will show everybody the mistakes that the government made.
Their claims that the wave in Jardim do Mar is still the same are easy to understand. They don't understand the waves, what backwash is, what a rip current is. I've been there after the construction and the wave is not the same.
The film makes a really positive statement about why we should preserve all the waves on the planet.»

«The film was sad, because it showed me what kind of place Madeira once was, and what it has become. These construction projects happened mainly because of a lack of education of the people, especially in Jardim do Mar, where they thought that the seawall would be a benefit to the villagers. This is a problem that has happened in mainland Portugal and other parts of the world, where the natural environment has been destroyed. It's not just about what the surfers lost, but about what everyone lost. The people who enjoyed the natural coast, who liked to swim from the rocks of the shoreline, now they have nowhere to go into the water except a slippery boat ramp.
The claim that the President of Madeira made, that the wave is still the same in Jardim do Mar, is completely wrong. He doesn't know what he's talking about. It's the same when people come to watch a surfing competition; they don't understand where swell comes from, how tides effect the surf, what backwash is and why it's bad for a surf spot. They can't judge the quality of the surf if they know nothing about the ocean.
The film was fair to both sides of the argument. It presented both viewpoints, what the island looked like before and after the construction, and even how the residents of Madeira felt about the construction before and after. It seemed like many of the people did change their minds about the construction after it was completed. The people in Jardim do Mar lost a source of pride in their town, because their wave was no longer considered the best on the island, and because the village lost some of its natural beauty.»
