Foi editado o American V: A Hundred Highways, o álbum póstumo de Johnny CASH, com as gravações realizadas em 2002-2003, antes da sua morte em 12 de Setembro de 2003, com 71 anos. Encerra-se, assim, o conjunto de álbuns gravados na American Recordings, sob direcção do produtor Rick Rubin (que produziu discos de bandas como Slayer, The Beastie Boys ou The Red Hot Chili Peppers). Após os 60 anos de idade, a carreira de CASH conheceu um novo capítulo, um tanto inesperado, alargando o seu legado. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world weariness of country.
