Mafra homenageia surfistas, Madeira escorraça-os II (bilingual)

Eis o monumento dedicado aos surfistas que a Câmara Municipal de Mafra inaugurou, na Ericeira, em Julho último, que foi assunto de reflexão no post anterior.

Consiste num tubo que envolve um surfista e um sistema de água no final do tubo, a simular uma onda, como se pode ler no Caparica Surf, de onde foram obtidas as imagens apresentadas.

Por cá, os "monumentos" que se fazem são estes: em carne viva. Toda a história está contada no filme Lost Jewel of the Atlantic.

Nem era preciso chegar ao ponto de fazer homenagens ou reconhecer o surf como um vector ou nicho do mercado turístico em alguns concelhos da Madeira. Ao menos não se promovessem atitudes hostis nem se destruíssem as condições oferecidas pela natureza... as ondas não precisam ser feitas, apenas preservadas.

Here is the monument that Mafra Municipality (in Portuguese mainland, near Lisbon) recently built to pay a tribute to surfers. In the previous post we compared the very opposite attitudes of public authorities in Mafra and Madeira towards surf and surfers.

The monument, placed in a roundabout in famous Ericeira, features a surfer surfing a tube. The water falling from the top simulates the effect of a real wave.

Here in Madeira, the "monuments" that are built to surfers are of this kind: em carne viva (in the flesh). The whole story is documented in the film Lost Jewel of the Atlantic.

Concerning Madeira, we do not even expect that public authorities do anything to pay tribute to surfers or even recognize the surf tourism market potential for the economy of various places in Madeira. We would expect at least that hostile attitudes were not promoted towards surf and surfers or that the natural surfing conditions in Madeira were not destroyed or damaged. Waves do not need to be built, just to be preserved...
